How to spot a fake Instagram vendor in Nigeria before you pay

Instagram has become Nigeria's largest unregulated marketplace. Phones, fashion, gadgets, food, even cars get sold daily in DMs. Most vendors are honest, hardworking entrepreneurs. A growing number are not. Here is how to tell which is which before you part with your Naira.

Why Instagram is the scam hotspot

Three reasons:

1. Creating a new account takes 30 seconds and is free.
2. Followers and engagement can be bought cheaply.
3. Instagram has no built in buyer protection for off platform payments.

That combination means a scammer can build a "trusted" looking shop in an afternoon and drain it in a week.

The seven point verification checklist

Before you transfer a single Naira to an Instagram vendor, run all seven of these. Skip none.

1. Account age

Tap the profile, three dots, About this account. Look at "Date joined." If the account is younger than six months and is selling high value items (phones, laptops, designer goods), that is a serious warning. Real businesses build slowly.

2. Posting consistency

Scroll their feed. Real vendors post regularly over months or years. A scam account often has 20 to 30 posts uploaded over a few days, all stock looking, with the rest of the feed blank.

3. Comments and DMs

Tap into the post comments. Real customer accounts will have profile photos, post history and Nigerian names. Bot comments look like "wow nice, dm me," from accounts with no posts and stolen profile photos.

4. Story highlights with REAL receipts

Look at their Story Highlights. A genuine vendor will have customer reviews, packaging videos, delivery confirmations. Look at the customer profiles tagged in those stories. If they are all suspicious, the highlights are staged.

5. A real outside address

Ask: "Do you have a shop I can come to?" or "What is your business name on CAC?" If they refuse to share or get defensive, that is your answer. Even online only Nigerian vendors will share a corporate name, a verified pickup address or at minimum, escrow.

6. Reverse image search the products

Save one of their product photos, do a Google reverse image search. If the same photo appears on AliExpress, Amazon or another Nigerian vendor's page, they likely do not have the stock, they are dropshipping at best or scamming at worst.

7. The escrow test

This is the single best test. Send them a message: "I am happy to pay through HarrenaPay escrow, you will see the money is funded, ship to me, and I will release on receipt." A legitimate vendor says yes immediately, because they have nothing to fear. A scam vendor will:

• Refuse outright.
• Claim escrow is "stress" or "unnecessary."
• Demand 50 percent upfront.
• Offer a "discount" if you pay direct.
• Go quiet.

This single test filters out almost every Instagram scam, because the scam only works if the money lands directly in their account.

Specific scam patterns to know

• The "preorder" scam: pay now, item arrives in three weeks. The wait is the scam, by week three the account is gone.
• The "I sold you the last one cheap, send the balance now" follow up to lock you in emotionally.
• The "my POS is down, please transfer to my personal account" deflection.
• The fake unboxing video of someone else's order to "prove" delivery.

If you have already paid and the vendor went silent

• Save every message and screenshot the account immediately, before it is deleted.
• Report the account to Instagram for fraud.
• File a chargeback with your bank if you paid by card, within 7 days.
• File a complaint with the EFCC online portal.
• Post in Nigerian consumer groups (Twitter, Nairaland) with the screenshots so others avoid the same account.

The one habit that ends Instagram scams for you

Never pay a vendor you have not transacted with before, outside of escrow. Make it a personal rule. The 1 to 2 percent fee is nothing next to the peace of mind, and you will never again refresh your inbox at 2am wondering if the package will come.
