Top escrow services in Nigeria in 2026: what to actually look for
By HarrenaPay Team · 21 May 2026 · 3 min read
Search "escrow Nigeria" today and you will see a long list of services, some legitimate, some questionable, some that disappeared last year. Instead of telling you which logo to trust, this guide gives you the checklist that any Nigerian buyer or seller should run before picking an escrow.
The non negotiables
If a service fails any of these, walk away.
1. A named CBN regulated payment partner (or a CBN licence)
The money has to move through CBN supervised rails. Either the escrow itself holds a CBN payment licence, or it operates on top of one that does. HarrenaPay partners with HarrenaPay, which is fully CBN licensed. If a service cannot name their licensed partner, that is a problem.
2. A registered Nigerian business entity
Find the company name on the website footer or terms of service. Search it on the Corporate Affairs Commission portal. If you cannot find a real registered entity behind the platform, you have no one to sue, no one to report to, and no recourse when things go wrong.
3. BVN and NIN linked KYC
Both buyer and seller must verify identity. Yes it adds five minutes to onboarding. Yes it is worth it. An escrow that lets anonymous users transact is not an escrow, it is a scam pipeline.
4. A published dispute resolution process
You should be able to read, before you sign up, exactly what happens if you and the other party disagree. Who reviews? What evidence counts? How long does it take? If this is vague or hidden, you will hate the answer when you actually need it.
5. Real, reachable Nigerian support
A phone number that gets answered. An email that gets replied to. A WhatsApp business line, not a random personal account. Telegram only support, with no other channel, is a warning sign.
6. Published fees with no hidden charges
Before funding, you must see the exact Naira fee. Watch for services that quote a low percentage but slip in "verification fees," "release fees" or unfavourable currency conversion at the end.
The strong "should haves"
These are not deal breakers but they make a clear difference.
- A mobile app with proper Nigerian network optimisation (works on patchy MTN data, not just office WiFi).
- Milestone payments for freelance and project work.
- Manual release option (the buyer has to actively click Release rather than time based auto release that you forgot about).
- Configurable transaction PIN for high value actions.
- Public reviews from real Nigerian users (check Twitter, Nairaland, Google reviews, not just the website's own testimonials).
- Clear privacy policy on how your BVN and ID data is stored.
- Insurance or guarantee fund for catastrophic failure scenarios.
Questions to ask before signing up
Even if a service looks legitimate, message support before you commit money. Ask:
- Who is your licensed payment partner?
- How long does dispute resolution typically take?
- What evidence do you accept (chat logs, waybills, video unboxings, screenshots)?
- What is the maximum transaction you support, and is there extra verification above that?
- What happens if your company shuts down, where does my money in escrow go?
The quality and speed of the answers tells you almost everything.
Why Nigerians end up using the wrong service
Most of the bad outcomes follow a pattern:
- The "escrow" was just one person on WhatsApp acting as a middleman with no licence, no entity, no oversight. They were trustworthy until the amount got large enough to tempt them.
- The service was technically legitimate but had no real dispute team, so when a disagreement happened, nothing got resolved.
- The service was so opaque about fees that the seller ended up with much less than expected, and the goodwill of the deal was destroyed.
The checklist above protects against all three.
Where HarrenaPay fits in
We are biased of course, but here is what we publish openly so you can evaluate us against the same checklist:
- dedicated wallets secured with our licensed partner bank: HarrenaPay.
- Registered entity: Harrena Africa Synergy LTD.
- BVN and NIN KYC: required on both sides.
- Dispute process: documented, with target turnaround.
- Lagos based support, reachable by phone, email and WhatsApp.
- Published Naira fee schedule visible before funding.
- Mobile and web access.
- Configurable transaction PIN, milestone payments, manual release.
Whoever you choose, run the checklist. Your Naira is worth the five minutes.
